Project Engineer

Joe Dapcevich

Summary

The City of Sammamish 2025 ADA Barrier Project consists of upgrading non-compliant ADA facilities within the City’s right-of-way to meet compliancy. The planned work includes:

  • Site A:  Replacement of damaged sidewalk panels at 16 locations along 228th Avenue SE/NE (between SE 4th Street to NE 8th Street)
  • Site B:  Replacement of pedestrian curb ramps at two intersections along SE Klahanie Blvd (256th Avenue SE & SE 39th Way)

Other items of work include new roadway striping, curb and gutter replacement, and tree root management.

This project is part of the City of Sammamish ADA Transition Plan, which was created in an effort to make Sammamish public facilities and programs accessible to all. The program aims to identify barriers which impede access to City buildings, parks, and pedestrian facilities in the public right-of-way. ADA hazards can exist in sidewalks, wheelchair ramps, crosswalks, staircases, curb ramps, push buttons, and ADA parking stalls. For more information on the ADA Transition Plan, visit the link below.

The planning process includes identification of physical barriers, prioritization of these barriers, and a schedule for barrier removal over time. The barriers are identified using the City’s ADA Hazard GIS database and by visual observation by City staff and community members. Areas with a higher concentration of ADA hazards, larger volumes of pedestrian traffic, and close proximity to public facilities are prioritized.

Hours of Work

Construction generally starts at 7:00 am and ends at 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Actual start and end times may vary slightly depending on construction progress. If construction continues into the school year (August 29th), working hours will be changed to 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.

Traffic Control

All streets and intersections will remain open throughout construction, however some travel lanes may be temporarily closed. Traffic control signage will be provided prior to and during construction to navigate drivers through the construction. Lane closures are restricted to 9:30am to 3:00pm.

Driveway & Sidewalk Access

Driveways will remain open throughout construction, however they may be temporarily closed while crews are mobilized. Some sections of sidewalk will also be temporarily closed while the panels are being replaced. Detour signs will be provided to direct pedestrians around the closures and to maintain a continuous pedestrian path.

Waste & Recycling Schedule

The waste and recycling schedule will not be changed due to construction. When days of paving and waste collection coincide, we work with the collection service to adjust their route schedule and focus first on the streets that are being paved. If there is construction in your neighborhood, please be sure to have your waste and recycling out extra early.

School Bus Routes

If construction continues into the school year, school bus routes and schedule will not be changed. We will be working with the paving contractor and  local school districts to ensure unimpeded service in all neighborhoods.

Tree Trimming

Tree trimming may need to be done in front of your house. If there is vegetation in front of your property that extends out into the street, it will need to be pruned back to allow the equipment to do the street resurfacing. Please trim the vegetation along your property if this is the case. City crews or the Contractor will trim vegetation as needed for the project. However, they will only be doing the minimum needed to clear the road for paving and some additional trimming may need to be completed afterwards by the adjacent property owner.
