Sammamish Sign Regulations were Updated in 2017 - Do You Know Where Your Signs Can Be Placed?

Release Date: July 25, 2019

Below are the City of Sammamish’s regulations concerning the placement/display of Non-Commercial Temporary Signs.

A Non-Commercial Temporary Sign is any sign that does not contain a commercial message (e.g. advertisement). Examples of non-commercial signs include signs for political candidates, signs regarding fund raising or membership drive activities for non-commercial or nonprofit entities or groups; signs related to ballot measures.

These regulations are mandated by the principle that City facilities and property are not to be used for campaign purposes.

Non-Commercial Temporary Signs may not be placed in the following locations:

  • Within center medians;
  • Within roundabouts and the areas on the outside edge of a roundabout;
  • Within traffic circles or islands;
  • Within vehicle travel lanes;
  • Within sidewalks; or
  • Within planting strips adjacent to City-owned land.

In addition, Non-Commercial Temporary Signs may not:

  • Be illuminated.
  • Be placed in a manner that negatively affects the health of trees, shrubs, or other landscaping.

Type I Non-Commercial Temporary Signs (Non-A-Frame): are limited to 4 square feet in area and a maximum height of 3 feet above the ground. Adding toppers to the signs are subject to the height limit. Type I signs are permitted to be displayed for 180 consecutive days per calendar year.

Type II Non-Commercial Temporary Signs (A-Frame): are limited to 6 square feet in area and a maximum of 3.5 square feet above the ground. Adding toppers to the signs are subject to the height limit. Type II signs are limited to be displayed for a maximum of 5 consecutive days.

On roads with no sidewalk, non-commercial temporary signs must be placed outside of the edge of the asphalt, and may not be placed so that any part of the sign extends over the asphalt.

Sign and property owners are responsible for removing their sign(s) after the sign has been posted for the maximum allowed duration.
