Council adopts master plans for local parks

The Sammamish City Council has officially adopted the master plans for Beaton Hill Park and Big Rock Park South, marking a significant step towards enhancing these natural treasures within our city.

A Comprehensive Process:
The master plans were developed through a city-adopted process involving the entire community, ensuring that the parks' improvements align with the needs and desires of those who use them. This process included an extensive community survey, public meetings, discussions with the Parks and Recreation Commission, and review by the City Council.

Project Goals:
The core goals of these master plans are to maintain these parks as peaceful and educational havens for all, ensuring accessibility for people of all ages and abilities. The plans aim to allow flexibility for active and passive recreational activities, respecting the natural context of the sites.

Here are some of the highlights of the approved master plans for each park:

Beaton Hill Park:

  • Two parking lots with a total of 44 stalls.
  • A p-patch with 40 plots, seating, and a tool shed.
  • Four pickleball courts, with optional lighting for evening play.
  • An off-leash dog park with separate areas for small and large dogs.
  • Accessible and soft-surface trails.
  • An accessible hillside play area.
  • A wetland boardwalk and overlooks.
  • Reconfigured parking on SE 8th Street.

Big Rock Park South:

  • A parking lot with 55 stalls.
  • Universal play areas featuring accessible and inclusive elements.
  • An open meadow for flexible events.
  • Adaptive reuse of existing buildings.
  • Accessible and soft-surface trails.
  • Garden areas with a focus on pollinators and native plants.
  • An optional 9-hole disc golf course with three holes at BRP Central.

The Sammamish Parks and Recreation Commission played a pivotal role in endorsing these master plans, considering extensive community input and thorough discussions. The City Council also unanimously approved the preferred master plan designs, following which a SEPA review process was completed.

We look forward to witnessing these master plans come to life and further enrich our community. These projects will not only enhance the natural beauty of our city but also provide valuable recreational opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities.

Thank you to Sammamish community member Mary Pigott, for your generous donation of land and vision to preserve this area so the entire community can enjoy it.

Design and construction phases will follow at a later date when the Council allocates a budget for each phase and park. Together, we can make Sammamish an even more vibrant and welcoming place to call home.
