The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that sidewalks be accessible, which means there must be a minimum clear width to get around any obstruction. However, it is more neighborly to have obstructions off of the sidewalk entirely.

Our adopted public works standards do not allow any objects in the public right-of-way. Trash bins and other blocking hazards such as vehicles and basketball hoops are some of the most frequently offending items.

Make sure NOT to place trash bins on the sidewalk.

Our walking disabled neighbors and neighbors with strollers use sidewalks daily to get around.

Unfortunately, they are regularly encountering trash bins that make sidewalks impassable. Our neighbors need unobstructed sidewalks for safe transportation. When trash bins are placed on the sidewalk, our neighbors are forced into the street which poses obvious safety concerns.

Where should you place your trash, recycle and yard bins?

All bins should be placed on the street with the wheels against the curb.

How can you help?

In addition to placing your bins in the proper location on the edge of the curb, consider helping your neighbors who aren't able-bodied. Ask if you can take their bins out for them and put them away. Also, spread the word amongst your neighbors about proper placement of bins.
