What's happening now

The Small Drainage Resolutions Program will be replacing the Ditch Maintenance and Small Drainage Capital Resolutions Program the City previously utilized to solve these smaller drainage issues, but with a broader scope.

The new program will provide consistent funding for staff to implement projects that typically address localized flooding or water quality issues. Most projects within this program are identified by maintenance staff or through drainage complaints. All projects within the program are less than $50,000.

Program Background

This program was originally the Ditch Maintenance and Small Drainage Capital Resolutions Program. The Ditch Maintenance program focused on proactive ditching and maintenance of the City's 64 miles of open ditches and swales. Stormwater ditches are being phased out for more efficient forms of managing stormwater runoff from roadways. The City's ditches and swales will still be maintained, as needed, and small drainage issues will be addressed more readily.

Funding these types of projects programmatically allows staff to:

♦ Bundle design and construction costs to increase efficiency

♦ Adaptively manage the program

♦ Respond to localized flooding or water quality issues associated with varying storm events

City Goal Achieved

♦ Goal G.1.:  Comprehensively evaluate and address problems related to the existing stormwater system and manage storm and surface water systems to ensure longevity of assets.

Controlling stormwater runoff and erosion

Uncontrolled stormwater runoff from the existing roadway and surrounding private properties results in erosion of the existing ditches and at culvert outfalls. Upgrades in the stormwater collection and conveyance system will be implemented to improve conditions and reduce the frequency of flooding events, erosion, and possibility of landslides.
