Sammamish 101: Learn more about our Stormwater Division

Do you know how your local government works? The City has shared a lot of information about the role and responsibilities of various positions in local government. Now, we want to highlight some of the departments within the city and the work that they do.

Stormwater is the rain or snowmelt that flows over hard surfaces like roads, rooftops, and sidewalks. It might seem simple, but managing it is essential to keeping the community safe and the environment healthy. The City’s Stormwater Division works behind the scenes every day to:cPrevent flooding, protect water quality, and maintain natural systems like streams, wetlands, and habitats.

From culverts and drains to storm ponds and waterways, we plan, build, and maintain the infrastructure that keeps stormwater moving safely through our community. Stormwater capital projects start with an identified need, such as maintenance issues, drainage complaints, or basin studies.

Each project goes through an assessment to estimate time, cost, and priority. Approved projects are added to the 6-year Stormwater Capital Improvement Plan and scheduled into the Stormwater Division’s two-year budget and work plan.
