Wet season arrives: Stay alert for downed trees, localized Flooding

Fall weather has arrived in the Puget Sound region. This can mean rain, high winds, mudslides, and localized flooding. Remember, wind gusts can knock over trees and power lines – learn how to stay safe if one of these events were to occur below.

How to Stay Safe

  • Avoid flooded roads and slide areas. Please do not drive through flooded roads or areas with mudslides. Water can be deeper than it looks, and slides can leave unstable ground and hidden debris behind.
  • Shelter in place if you can. If you are able, please stay home during the worst of any storm.
  • Give crews time to respond. A mudslide can bring down power and telecommunication lines as well as trees, which can knock out local power and phone or internet service. Crews will work to restore service as quickly as they safely can. City crews clean up debris on city-owned land and streets. Downed trees on private property are the responsibility of the property owner.
  • Know who handles power lines. Power companies are responsible for repairing power lines. The City cannot do this work. Once utility crews have made live wires safe, City crews can come in and begin clearing debris. Always stay far away from downed lines and assume they are live. Check https://www.pse.com/ for more info if you experience a power outage.
  • Be prepared at home. Make sure you have extra food and water on hand. Depending on your needs, you may also want extra blankets or firewood, battery-operated fans, battery-operated flashlights, and spare batteries.
